Be followed from the fediverse

Let people on Mastodon, Threads and other servers follow you or your publication, see what you publish and reply to it

The fediverse is the set of servers, Mastodon and Threads among them, whose members can follow each other without sharing one account. Turn it on and people there can follow you or your publication, see what you publish in their own feed, and answer it. They don't need a Peakub account.

It is off until you turn it on, for you and for each space of your publication, and you can turn it off at any time. The fediverse is for people aged 16 and over.

Your own account

Open your account Settings and choose the Fediverse tab. Under Your account on the fediverse, switch on Share my account on the fediverse and choose Save. The address people will search for is shown under the switch, for example @alice@peakub.com.

Once it is on, what you publish goes out under your name: an article as its title, a short teaser, its cover and a link (the full text only when the article is free), a post as a short message. Your followers see it in their feed. Posts you write inside a publication are shared by that publication too, if you turned it on (see below).

Change address lets you pick another handle. Your followers' servers are told that you moved and most follow your new address on their own. The old address is kept and nobody else can take it.

Your publication, book club and coverages

In the Studio, open Growth and choose Fediverse. The page shows a summary of your publication on the fediverse (its Status, on or off, its Fediverse followers, the number of Servers they come from, and its Address, with a Copy button) and, in a column beside it, three buttons: Settings, Help and Insights.

Choose Settings: it opens the Fediverse section of your publication's settings window. Under Share on the fediverse there is a switch for the publication, one for its book club and one for each coverage, each with the address it would have, for example @notabene@notabene.peakub.com. Choose Save.

A space shares what its authors publish in it: people who follow the publication see those articles and posts in their feed, shared by the publication. An article whose authors haven't turned on their own account is shown as coming from the publication. Posts written by the publication's team (its owner and editors) in its spaces go out under the publication when the writer hasn't turned on their own account; a reader's post goes out only if that reader turned on their own account.

Some spaces can't be turned on, and the page tells you why in place of the switch: Paid spaces stay on Peakub, Private spaces stay on Peakub, Publish it first, Claim it first. A paid article never goes out in full, only as a summary and a link.

Your followers

The followers of your publication are listed under Fediverse followers at the bottom of the Fediverse page under Growth, and your own followers in the Fediverse tab of your account settings. They also show as a Fediverse followers row in your audience. They are never sent emails; they follow in their own feed.

For each follower you can Remove them, Block this account or Block this server, which refuses every account of that server.

Replies, likes and boosts

When someone answers what you published, their reply arrives under it as a comment, with their name, their address and a small Fediverse mark that opens their profile. A reply to a reply threads under it. A like counts as a like and a boost as a repost.

Replies from the fediverse follow your moderation rules. In your publication's Moderation settings, Hold replies from the fediverse keeps them waiting for your approval. See Moderating your publication. A reader of yours who replies to a post shared on the fediverse sends their reply there only if they have shared their own account; otherwise it stays on Peakub.

Deleting

When you remove a post or an article, turn the fediverse off, or delete your account, Peakub asks the other servers to delete what they received. Most of them do, but each server is run by someone else and Peakub can't force them. A copy may stay on a server that ignores the request.

Turning the fediverse off also forgets your followers there.

Already have an account there?

You don't have to use a Peakub address. See Link your Mastodon or Threads account.

If something doesn't work

  • The switch is missing. The page says why in its place: for example your account is suspended, you are under 16, a paid or private space stays on Peakub, or it has to be published or claimed first.
  • Nobody finds your address. Check that the switch is on and saved, and search the full address with both parts, such as @you@peakub.com.
  • A reply doesn't show. The publication may hold replies from the fediverse for approval, in its Moderation settings.
  • A copy of something you deleted is still on another server. Each server is run by someone else and may ignore the request to delete it.

Your account's Fediverse tab also has a Help button with this whole guide.
