Answer a piece
Write to a publication about an article, a zine, a chapter or a page you were sent, alone or in a conversation shared with the other readers
When a publication sends you a piece, you can answer it. Your message goes to the publication's team, under the piece, and the conversation stays in your Conversations with the piece at its top.
Start from the Inbox
On a line of your Inbox, choose Answer. The window is the one of every chat: the publication's picture and name at the top with the piece's name under it, the back arrow, and under the header the piece itself with a Read button that opens it in a new tab.
Write in the box at the foot and send. Your first message creates the conversation: opening or reading a piece never does, so nothing is started until you write. On the Conversations page the window opens at the right; in the small panel at the bottom right it replaces the list, and the back arrow brings you back.
The team's answers come back in the same window, and the line in your Inbox shows the Answered dot. You can also write about a piece from the email you received: see below.
Who can answer
Each publication decides who may answer a piece, and so may each piece: anyone it was sent to, only subscribers, only paid subscribers, or nobody. Answer only shows for a piece you may answer. If you try anyway you are told why: answers are off for this piece, only subscribers or only paid subscribers can answer here, or it asks for a higher tier.
You can answer only a piece that was sent to you. If you unsubscribed from the publication, or its team stopped you from chatting, you can still open the piece and the conversations you already had, but not write: the window says "Subscribe again to write to this publication. You can still read this piece." A publication that blocked you has no pieces in your Inbox.
A shared conversation, or a private one
A creator chooses, for each piece, the type of its conversation:
- Group (the default): all the readers who answer the piece write in one shared conversation, and read each other. Above the answer box, a line says: "Everyone in this conversation reads what you write." Write as you would in a comment thread.
- Split: each reader has a private thread with the publication. Nobody else reads yours.
The creator chooses it in the piece's publish window. A thread already started keeps its type if the creator changes it later.
Answering by email
A newsletter email can be answered by replying to it. The reply reaches the publication's team, and:
- for a split piece, it lands in your private conversation about the piece, the same one you would write in from the app;
- for a group piece, it is published in the shared conversation, and everyone in it can read it. The email's footer says so: "Your reply to this email is shared with everyone in its conversation." A group conversation is read in Peakub only: what the others write is not emailed back to you.
Reply to an email only if you are fine with that.
If you delete your account
Your conversations with every publication are erased with your account.
