Following vs. subscribing - they're not the same thing

Following a publication or club adds it to your feed - that's it, nothing arrives in your inbox. Subscribing additionally gets you new posts by email. You can do either without the other: follow a dozen publications and only subscribe to the two you don't want to miss.

Turning notifications down (or up)

What you're alerted about, and where - in-app, email, or both - is covered in Community. Nothing there is all-or-nothing either.

Unsubscribing from one publication's emails

Every email has an unsubscribe link, or you can do it from your account settings. Either way, it only stops that one publication's emails - your account, and everything else you follow, is untouched.
