Your Inbox

Everything the publications you follow sent you, an article, a zine, a chapter or a page, in one list, with what is new, updated or answered, and how to clear it

The Inbox is where the pieces that publications sent you wait for you. It replaces the old For you page: instead of a feed of everything, it is a list of what was sent to you, with what you have not opened yet marked.

It is the first tab of Conversations, next to your chats with publications.

Where to find it

  • In the left menu, the Conversations entry opens the Conversations page. A number on it counts what is waiting for you: the pieces in your Inbox that are new or answered, plus your unread chats. Past 99 it says "99+".
  • On the Conversations page, the Inbox tab comes first and carries its own count.
  • On a computer, the small panel at the bottom right of the screen has the same Inbox tab. The panel stays closed when a page opens, unless the link you came from asked for it.
  • On a phone, the Conversations icon of the bottom bar opens the same list.

If you are not signed in, the entry is not shown: the Inbox belongs to your account.

What is in it

Every article, zine, chapter and page a publication you follow sent you, newest first, grouped under the day they were published. A line shows the piece's cover, its rubric and title, its series when it has one, the publication it comes from ("in" the publication) and how it is accessed (free, for subscribers, for paid members).

The Inbox shows what was really sent to you:

  • A piece a publication did not send you is not there. That includes a piece of a rubric or a series you muted, and a piece sent to a part of the audience you are not in.
  • If you were imported from another platform, a piece shows up once it was actually sent to you.
  • A page is listed only when its publication put it in subscribers' Inbox.

Only those four kinds are listed: events, coverages, series and episodes are not in the Inbox. The list opened from your picture keeps your other notifications (likes, replies, follows), but no longer lists the pieces sent to you: they are in the Inbox.

The search box of the Conversations page narrows the Inbox to the pieces whose title, or whose publication's name, holds your words. The All and Unread tabs list your waiting Inbox pieces too, beside your chats.

What the dot says

The dot at the right of a line says what changed since you last looked:

  • New: you never opened this piece.
  • Updated: the creator published changes to a piece you had already been sent. It lights the dot, but it does not add to the count.
  • Answered: the publication's team answered your message about this piece.

When several are true, the dot shows Answered, then New, then Updated. A line with no dot has nothing new. A new or answered piece is also set in bold.

If a creator unpublishes a piece and publishes it again, it comes back as it left: new if you never opened it, with no dot if you had.

What marks a piece as read

A piece counts as opened when you:

  • open it from the Inbox (its title, or Read);
  • visit its page while signed in;
  • click a link to it in the email the publication sent you, even if you are signed out in that browser.

Only a click counts. Merely opening the email does not: it never clears a dot.

Answer, Read and Clear

Under the details of each line:

  • Answer opens the piece's conversation: the piece at the top, your messages below, the answer box at the foot. See Answer a piece. It is shown only if the publication lets you answer this piece.
  • Read opens the piece in a new tab and marks it opened. A click on the piece's title or cover does the same.
  • Clear takes this piece out of your Inbox for good: its count goes too, and a republication will not bring it back to you. Your conversation about it, if you had one, stays in your chats.

Clear all

At the foot of the list, Clear all (in the panel, a button floating beside New conversation) empties the whole Inbox. A side window asks you to confirm: every piece leaves your Inbox and its count goes back to zero; your conversations with publications stay in your chats; and what publications send you from now on arrives as usual. Choose Clear to confirm or Cancel.

If you unsubscribe, or are blocked

  • You unsubscribed from a publication: you keep its pieces in your Inbox, to read. You cannot write to it: the conversation shows "Subscribe again to write to this publication. You can still read this piece."
  • A publication blocked or banned you: its pieces leave your Inbox. If its team stopped you from chatting, you keep the pieces to read only.

If the Inbox can't load

The list says "The Inbox can't be read right now. Try again in a moment." and offers Try again. Your chats stay available, and nothing is lost.

If you delete your account

Deleting your account erases your Inbox, with your conversations with every publication.
