Previews on hover

Point at a person, a publication, a series or a link in a text to see a small card about it, without leaving the page

On a computer, when you rest the pointer on a name, a small card opens under it with what you need to decide whether to click. You stay on the page. It is there for readers and for creators alike.

What opens a card

  • A person, on their name or their avatar: their picture, name, handle, bio and how many followers they have, with a Follow button. You don't see the button on your own card.
  • A publication, on its name in a small mention: its picture, name, line and how many subscribers it has.
  • A series, on its line: its picture, name, line and how many parts it has, and how many are planned.
  • A link in a text that the author made to one of their own pieces: an article, a coverage, an event, a book club or a zine. The card shows its picture, title and line.

Each card says what it is ("Person", "Publication", "Series", "Article") above its name, and its title is a link to the page itself.

How it behaves

The card opens after a moment of pointing, not at once, so it doesn't pop up as you move across the page. It stays while the pointer is on the card, so you can reach its Follow button, and it closes shortly after you leave. Scrolling closes it too.

It is read only when you ask for it, by pointing: nothing is loaded in advance.

On a phone or a tablet

There is no hover on a touch screen, so there is no card there: tapping a name or a link takes you to the page, as before.
