Comments on passages
Let readers comment on and like single passages of your articles and of the snippets in them, turn it off, and see what resonated
On an article, readers can react to one passage instead of the whole piece: comment on it, like it, repost it. What they leave shows in the margin to the right of your text, beside the paragraph it belongs to. How readers use it is in Comments on passages. This page is what you control.
It is on by default
Nothing to switch on. Every article has it, on screens wide enough for a margin. On a phone, readers get the same thing as a panel that slides out of a paragraph. Blank blocks, calls to action and announcements have no margin.
Who can comment and like
By default, whoever can react to the article can react to its passages. You can give passages their own rule with the second select of the publish window, On passages: same as who can react: anyone, only subscribers, only paid subscribers, or nobody. See Who can react.
A reader who can't write sees why in the thread, for example "Subscribers comment on passages here".
Paid passages stay paid
If a block of your article is for a paid level, the comments and likes on it are too, and so is the text they quote. A reader below that level is never sent them: they are left out on Peakub's side, not hidden in the page.
Turn it off for a publication
In your publication's Website settings, in the Website tab under Comments and activity, Comments on passages is set to Shown in the margin or Hidden. Hidden removes the margin from every article of the publication. Readers can also hide it for themselves, on their device.
Snippets in your article
When your article holds a snippet, readers can comment on and like its text from your article too. Those reactions belong to the snippet, not to the article: they show beside the snippet in every article that uses it, and the ones written elsewhere say "From another piece ·". The comments written on a snippet while reading your article are also listed under it. Beside a snippet, readers can also Save it and Share it (the link opens your article at that snippet). Who can react follows the article they are reading. See Snippets and blocks from your publication in an article.
Being told
When a reader comments on a passage, you get a notification with a link that opens the article on that passage. You get at most one per passage per hour, so a busy passage doesn't flood you.
What resonated
An article's insights (the chart icon on the article) has a What resonated section: the ten passages readers left the most on, ranked by comments first, then likes, each with its quote and a bar. You see all of them, including the passages of paid blocks.
When you edit a published article
When you publish changes, Peakub looks for each commented passage again in the new text. Those it finds keep their comments, even moved. Those it can't find are kept and listed under the article, for readers, as On passages that changed, with the original quote. Nothing is lost.
The comments are also listed under the article with the quoted passage above them, a link to the passage in the text.
