Publishing

Three layers, smallest to largest: a post is one piece of writing, a series is a handful of pieces sharing an arc, a publication is everything you write, named and covered as one thing. Rubrics cut across them: themes you file your content under.

Posts - the actual writing

Drafts stay private until you publish or schedule them; nothing goes out by accident. Rich content - images, embeds, formatted text - is part of a post, not a separate step.

Posts with several photos or videos

A post can carry up to 10 photos and videos. In the post's form, "Add photos or videos" adds files, and you drag them to put them in the order you want. On the post's card, readers see them in a single row that scrolls sideways, each file at its own proportions. Videos play in the row.

Publishing a post in several places

In the post form, "Publish in... (optional)" lets you choose where the post goes, and you can choose several: your publications, book clubs, coverages and events. Start typing in "Search a publication, a book club, a coverage..." and the matching places appear as you type, each with its icon, its kind, and "in" followed by its publication's name when it belongs to one. Each place you pick shows as a tag you can remove. Once you've picked at least one, an optional title field appears.

Some places let you post as a subscriber: you then see that your post appears among the others there, and stays yours. See Complements.

Editing or removing a post you published

On your own post, the ... menu at the end of its reaction bar offers Edit and Remove. Other people's posts only offer Report.

Edit opens the post in the writing window, with its text. Unlike a draft, a published post does not save as you type: nothing reaches readers until you choose Save. The button then reads Save instead of Post, and Post saved. appears. Saving keeps the post published, does not count it as a new post and does not announce it again. Clear is not offered, since a published post is removed from its menu.

Remove asks "Remove this post? It will no longer be shown anywhere.". Once you confirm, Post removed. appears and the post leaves the feed, its page, your profile and your publication's list.

Series - for writing that isn't one-and-done

Serialized fiction, a multi-part guide, a recurring column - anything with an arc benefits from being grouped. A series numbers its parts ("Part 3 of 6"), has a page and an RSS feed of its own, and links each part to the one before and the one after. Readers who get your emails can stop receiving a series without leaving your publication. See Series.

Rubrics - for themes that never end

A rubric is a section of your publication, like a magazine's: "Investigations", "Interviews". What's in it shows its name in red above its own, and readers get a page and a feed for the rubric. See Rubrics.

Publications - the thing all of this lives under

Name, description, cover art, and every post and series you've published - that's your publication. It also controls things you wouldn't guess from the name, like your custom domain and how new posts reach subscribers.

The Create menu

Everything you can make starts from a Create button. In Studio it sits at the bottom of the left menu, beside "View", and it opens a menu whose items are grouped by lines:

• Article, Page, Zine and Snippet.
• Rubric, Series and Variant.
• Label and Segment.
• Import subscribers.

Everything you make from there is made in the publication you are editing, so you are never asked which one. Article, Page and Zine open their usual creation windows. Rubric, Series, Variant, Label and Segment open their Studio tab with the "New ..." window already open. Snippet opens the Snippets tab, where each kind of snippet has its own "New". Import subscribers goes to Audience > Subscribers and opens the import window at once, the same as that tab's Import subscribers button.

On the home page, the left menu has the same Create button with a shorter menu: Article, Page, Zine, then Publication and Studio. If you don't have a publication yet, Peakub first offers to create one, then opens what you asked for. The top bar has a Create button too (it used to read "Publish"): its menu shows Post and Recommend first, then Article, Page, Zine, Publication and Studio. See Zines and Adding a page.

Finding and managing your content in Studio

The lists in Studio (articles, visuals, coverages, events, zines and a book club's schedule) share the same controls.

• Status filter: lists open on "Not archived", which shows your drafts and your published items. Switch to Draft, Published, Archived or All status when you need them. If a filter or a search leaves a list empty, its controls stay on screen so you can undo the choice.
• Publish button: right after an item's status, a button opens the item's publish window, the same one its editor uses. It reads "Publish changes" when the item is already published. Archived items don't have it.
• Archive and restore: archiving takes an item off your site and out of the default list. An archived item has a Restore button, which puts it back as a draft. Archiving, deleting and restoring update the list right away, without reloading the page.
• Pin: articles, coverages, zines, events and book clubs also have a pin icon. See Pins.

Settings in Studio

Studio tabs that have settings (the dashboard's general ones, the Website tab's, the Book club tab's) have a Settings button. It opens a window with that tab's settings. At the top right of each section:

• Help opens the guide for that section.
• All settings puts every section in the same window, which grows wider. A search bar ("Search a setting") filters them by name or by what they hold (name, address, language, header, menu, domain, books, access...), and the tabs under it switch between General, Website and Book club. Saving there keeps the window open, so you can go on to the next section. If nothing matches, it says "No setting matches."

If you don't have a book club yet, its section says so ("You don't have a book club yet") and offers "Go to the Book club tab" to start one.
