Reactions on cells
Let readers comment on, like, save, share and repost the cells of a page or a zine, choose who can, and read what they reacted to
On a page or a zine, readers can react to one cell instead of the whole piece: a hero, a gallery, a quote, a book club cell. They can comment, like, save, share and repost, the same gestures as on a passage of an article. How readers use it is in Reacting to the cells of a page. This page is what you control.
Choose who can react
Open the publish window of the page or the zine. Right under the select for who can react, another select sets the reactions on its cells:
- Reactions on cells: off
- Reactions on cells: anyone signed in
- Reactions on cells: only subscribers
- Reactions on cells: only paid subscribers
It reads Applies right away, without publishing: the change is live as soon as you pick it, so you can switch it off the moment a page attracts abuse. It is separate from the rule for the whole piece. A new page starts with cell reactions off. Check the select on a zine to see what applies to it.
A reader never reacts to what they can't read: a cell for a paid level has no reactions for a reader below it.
What readers get
Each cell that can take reactions shows a thin line at its right edge, solid when there is something on it. Cells with nothing to react to, such as a call to action, a subscribe block or a section header, show none. Single photos of a gallery, and the image and the text of a hero, take their own reactions. Nothing on the page moves or changes size when reactions load or open.
In the editor
In the editor you see the lines on every cell that readers can react to, even when the setting is off, with a note that readers can't react yet.
The Reactions tab at the right edge opens a drawer, Reactions on this page, listing every cell with its counts and comments, in Page order or Most reacted. Show on the page takes you to the cell. A heat bar down the side of each cell shows where readers reacted most.
Reactions that belong to a cell you removed, or that became another kind of cell, are kept apart under On cells that changed. Readers never see them, and they are never moved onto another cell.
Insights and notifications
The insights of the page or the zine have What readers reacted to, ranking cells and their parts. You are also told when readers react: at most one notification per cell per hour, by email only for a comment.
Moderation
Comments on cells follow your moderation rules and can be reported like any other comment. See Moderating your publication.
