Unpublish a publication

Take your publication offline without erasing anything, and bring it back by publishing again

Unpublish takes your whole publication offline. Nothing is erased, and you can publish it again whenever you wish. It is the reversible choice, next to Remove, which erases everything after thirty days.

Where it is

On your Studio dashboard, press Settings. At the bottom of General, under Export my data, the red-bordered Danger zone holds Unpublish and Remove. Only the owner of the publication sees the Danger zone. Anyone else on the team is told that only the owner can unpublish or remove it.

Press Unpublish, then confirm in the side window Unpublish this publication?. If the publication is not published yet, the button reads Already offline and cannot be pressed.

You can also unpublish from the removal window, where Unpublish now is offered while a paid subscription still renews, because removing a publication has to wait until paid subscriptions are over.

What happens

  • Readers can no longer reach your publication, and search and recommendations stop showing it.
  • Paid subscriptions are not charged again. Each one ends at the end of the period already paid for, and the subscriber is emailed.
  • No one can subscribe, free or paid, while it is offline.
  • Conversations with readers become read-only: nothing is lost and nothing new arrives.
  • Your fediverse account is suspended, not deleted. Its followers are kept.
  • Your widget, your leaderboard and your custom domain answer as if the publication did not exist.

Nothing is erased: your articles, subscribers, settings and files stay as they are.

Bring it back

Publish the publication again. Readers, search and recommendations find it again, and the paid subscriptions that the unpublish ended resume.

A publication that is scheduled for removal cannot be published again until the removal is undone. See Remove a publication.
